Typology of towns

The cartography of towns according to a common method allows us to develop suitable urban typologies to clarify the issues of town planning common to several towns. Three types of classification are suggested:

- Towns according to the morphological unit to which they belong: maritime plain, interior plain, low plateau, medium plateau, plateau, high plateau and valley,

- Towns according to their site registration: plateau, hillside and valley for towns in the interior; dune, plain and bogland for coastal towns,

- Towns according to the possibility of partial or complete flooding of the fortifications in the 17th Century.

These typologies highlight the relationship the town has had with its site so as to provide help to contemporary town planning projects.
