GUIDED TOURS
“Dismantling and Consequences”
In 1892, Cambrai freed itself of its fortifications, deemed as useless. A huge project covering 100 hectares began, sparing only a few doors and towers. Then, the boulevards were built to replace the ditches as well as the construction of housing for the towns’ folk and the workers, depending on the location.

“Water and Fortifications, an example of the Southern Front”
The Escaut River once ensured the defensive flooding of ditches at the south and west sides of the town. While its main course today runs under the Porte des Arquets, we also invite you to explore the hidden parts of its other arms.

“Water and Fortifications, an example of Selles”
In the 16th century, northwest of the town, extended its fortifica­tions by a “couronné, a fortified work defined by the waters of the Escaut River. It was in this labyrinth of fortifications that the first boats were navigated in Cambrai.

“Mediaeval Door Quarter, the Porte de Paris”
Opening up to the kingdom of France, the former port of Saint-Sépulcre possesses ingenious defence devices to control any possible attack. This quarter, situated on the south side of the town was sheltered by wall, then ramparts.

In Le Cateau–Cambrésis, (24 kilometres east of Cambrai by the RD 643) :
“Former Fortifications of Le Cateau”
This unique visit will enable you to discover a forgotten stronghold. Curtain walls, covered way and casemates will open their doors.

“Former Entry into the Waters of the Escautin”
Recent discoveries have revealed a former cofferdam of an arm of the Escaut River.
